The Smithville Lady Tigers basketball team defeated Yoakum 56-35 on Monday in the Tiger Gym. The win improved the Lady Tigers to 4-1 on the season.

Senior point guard Sydnie Brenner led all scorers with 23 points, including one 3-pointer and two free throws. Deysha Brandyburg added 12 points, and Bretyn Roberts had nine.

The Bulldogs took an early 2-1 lead with just over six minutes left in the first quarter, but the Smithville defense shut them down the rest of the frame and the Lady Tigers poured it on offensively, taking a 17-2 lead after one quarter.

Yoakum opened the second quarter by scoring six unanswered points before Roberts and Brandyburg answered with back-to-back baskets for Smithville. The Lady Tigers used a full-court press late in the quarter to keep Yoakum at bay, taking a 27-11 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with the Lady Tigers and Bulldogs trading baskets for the first three minutes before it settled into a defensive struggle. Both teams scored 12 points in the quarter, pushing Smithville’s lead to 39-23.

Brenner had a big fourth quarter, scoring nine of her 23 points in the final period, including an and-one. Smithville outscored Yoakum 17-12 in the quarter to pick up the 56-35 victory.

The Lady Tigers will have the rest of the holiday week off. They are next scheduled to play at Hallettsville on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 6:15 p.m.
